    Treating Jaw Joint Pain

Many patients suffer from joint and muscle pain. Dr. Pappas has spent over 20 years of his career learning and perfecting ways to help alleviate this pain. Using a combination of neuromuscular dentistry and centric relation dentistry, Dr. Pappas helps patients achieve a better bite and, in turn, decreases their discomfort and TMJ-related pain.  shutterstock_324033263

    Neuromuscular Dentistry

The neuromuscular treatment philosophy is all about balance. It’s about finding a perfect resting position of the jaw to create a balanced bite. Using a series of measurement tools such as sonography, electromyography, jaw tracking and TENS, Dr. Pappas can establish the optimum position of the jaw and plan treatment options that can help you achieve and maintain that position.

    Centric Relation Dentistry

Centric relation has had many definitions since its debut in the 1930s. What has been consistent, however, is that centric relation is about the ideal jaw position that creates a comfortable and strong balance for the muscles, nerves and joints of the jaw.

    The Pain of TMJ Disorders

The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull and acts as a sliding hinge. The joints can be felt on each side of the jaw by placing your fingers just in front of your ears on the sides of your face and then opening and closing your mouth.

The most common symptom of a TMJ disorder is pain in the jaw. This often happens when chewing, yawning and sometimes even just speaking. The exact cause of the pain can be different for each patient. For some, TMJ disorders could be genetic, while others may grind or clench their jaw at night without realizing it.
